It’s award season … I won’t be going home with an Oscar but there are still prestigious honours to be won.

2009 Bloggies

Hurrah! Nominations are open for the 2009 Bloggies and this year they have introduced an award for best travel blog. This is great news! Last year I bemoaned the fact that not only was there no travel blog category but no travel blogs made the finalist list for any of the general or location-specific categories either. We have the opportunity to change that this year. Please submit your nomination form before the deadline of January 12 and nominate your favourite travel blogger. You get three nominations per category but only one nomination form per person so choose wisely!

Blogging awards are popping up all over the place but the Bloggies are established and very well regarded – they’ve been running for nine years. A panel of randomly chosen voters will choose the finalists from the most nominated blogs, and the list will then go out for public vote.

Of course, I would be incredibly honoured and flattered if you would consider nominating Roaming Tales for Best Travel Weblog category or its sister site The Gooseberry Fool for the Best Food Weblog category. You could also consider nominating me in any of the following categories: Best European Weblog; Best Photography of a Weblog; Best Writing of a Weblog; Best-Kept Secret Weblog or Weblog of the Year. However, what I really hope is that you will take the time to nominate your favourite blogs, even if that’s not me.

I’m not going to nominate myself for a Bloggie. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with doing that but I’m going to take the opportunity to pay it forward and earn some blogging karma by nominating other blogs. We’ve come a long way in building a travel blogging community in the past year and I want to help that process along. It’s going to be a really tough decision to narrow this down to three for the travel category as there are so many great travel blogs out there. I plan to nominate travel blogs in other categories too but I probably won’t declare my nominations publicly since someone has to miss out.

Lonely Planet Travel Blogger Awards

Nominations are also open for the inaugural Lonely Planet Travel Blogger Awards. Again I would be honoured if you would consider nominating Roaming Tales for either best travelogue or best consumer travel blog (or any other category where you think it would fit). You can submit the form more than once, so please consider supporting some of the numerous other fantastic travel blogs as well. I know I will be.

2008 Weblog Awards

The 2008 Weblog Awards are open for your votes. There are some great finalists in the travel blog category and I urge you to check them out and then vote for your favourite (you can do this once a day if you’re really dedicated). My vote went to National Geographic‘s Intelligent Travel blog, which has been one of my favourite reads for some time.

However, there are some worthy contenders on the list, with a mix of familiar (Notes from the Road, The Lost Girls, Jaunted and The Cranky Flier) and unfamiliar (My Kugelhopf, LL World Tour, Folie a Deux, The Asian Traveler and Curious Expeditions). I’ll be checking them all out thoroughly and may vote again if one of the new blogs grabs my fancy.

2009 Travvies

I’m not sure what happened with the 2008 Travvies as the most recent post I can find on the subject was about nominations closing in April last year. I’ve contacted the site owner to see if I can get an update on the outcome of the 2008 awards and if it’s running again in 2009. I’ll update here if I get a response.
