Photo Friday: Brød in Nyhavn

Copenhagen, Denmark; August 2006
Nyhavn or New Haven is one of the most picturesque parts of Copenhagen. The waterfront is lined with restaurants, cafés and bars and you can sit outside and enjoy a bite to eat or a drink. The classic Danish open sandwich – or smørrebrød – is a popular choice, or a glass of the excellent Danish beer. However, if you fancy a pastry you’ll have to ask for a wienerbrød (Vienna bread) – what we know as a ‘Danish’, the Danes attribute to the Austrians.
I was in Copenhagen in summer and it was lovely and warm sitting outside by the water. Apparently in winter, some hardy souls still sit outside, and the restaurants provide blankets with the outdoor chairs. Brrr.

Thanks for sharing this lovely scene.
Very interesting, and beautiful, too. Thanks for sharing!
What a lovely photo. Thanks for sharing.
I love Northern Europe in the summer – this makes me want to go!
August 2006, yet it looks a tad cloudy? What time of day was this taken?
I do want to visit the Scandinavian region, though. Everything there looks so…pristine. Organized. Calm.
I’m not sure but from memory I think it was late afternoon – a few light clouds but mostly clear. The sky was reflecting the water. – Caitlin.
Maybe I’ll get to visit soon – but I agree with you, summer time is best.
Travellers from the UK might be interested in the free travel on offer on the Visit Denmark website, for those who are prepared to write, photograph, video or dare I say blog about their trip. Apply before end March 09 for trips throughout the year.

I have to say, that’s something I love about the Euro-continent in general. The love of sitting outdoors, of absolutely fighting to the last blanket for the right to sit out in the fresh air. If it’s cold – then that’s what jackets, hats and scarves are for.
In comparison, we Brits like our stuffy, muggy rooms & pubs far too much, I reckon. Especially ones where the radiators are on too high.
I think I’d like Copenhagen a lot. (Never been. Must). Sounds a touch like Bruges, which I have been to and loved, strolling around with my girlfriend of the time, both giggling because it was bitterly cold and yet everyone seem to be out on the streets. Apart from a few Brits, hidden in cafes with steamed-up windows.
<—stereotyping, moi?
This shot reminds me a little of the colorful houses we saw in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. St. John’s is a seaside town and had rows of houses in varied colors like these.
This looks like another place I’d love visiting. I’d probably be one of the “hardy souls” sitting outside in the winter!
