Photo Friday: Edible food-like substances

Singapore Airlines flight from London to Singapore; March 2009

“Millac Maid. Tastes like fresh milk. Long life skimmed milk with non milk fat.”

Hmm… Do you think this is what Michael Pollan means when he talks about the difference between food and edible food-like substances?

I wonder what the non milk fat is? Vegetable oil, perhaps? Yuk.

Luckily, the lovely Singapore Airlines flight attendants were happy to bring me a glass of fresh milk and I used that in my tea.

The first thing that popped into my head was “tastes like chicken”…the universal phrase people seem to use when they’re trying to describe something with a blandly and mildly familiar taste.

  3. Oh dear, it’s hard to tell if this is a case of Chinglish or artificial milk. Very strange indeed.
