Photo Friday: Anyone for tennis?

Heron Island, Great Barrier Reef, Queensland, Australia; April 2009

Tennis

During our week on Heron Island for our honeymoon we met another couple, Campbell and Elizabeth from Sydney, and we hung out a few times. The dive and snorkel boats were cancelled for the first few days of our stay due to high seas so we were casting around for other entertainment options. The resort has a tennis court that guests can use for free so we thought it would be fun to hit some balls around – more trying to get a volley going than an actual game.

This was made more challenging by the fact that the court was wet from rain, Liz had a sore foot, and I’ve never played tennis before and have naturally poor hand-eye coordination. Not to mention that there was apparently only one ball left on the island and it was a rather sorry specimen. Apparently more balls were due on the boat the following day.

I was also made a little nervous by the fact that another guest chose to sit with her laptop immediately next to the court. Apparently it was the only place she could access the staff wireless internet and she had work to do. Risky business though, as the ball came sailing within a foot of her and her laptop several times. At least we weren’t playing cricket (cricket balls are hard).

All the same we managed to sustain the fun for an hour or so. I would actually love to learn to play tennis properly.

This is one sad-looking ball. Kudos to all of you for playing on.

  2. Sounds like my recent week on the Reef–cyclone and torrential downpour nearly the whole time!

Bummer! No for us, it was just the first few days. We were there for two weeks and had some lovely weather too. – Caitlin.

Funny how on one’s honeymoon even the rain can be enjoyable!

Ah, I used to play tennis in high school, and it may take me a lifetime but I plan to get back on the courts. The day I can say ‘tennis anyone’ and pick of a game is a day I’ve truly arrived! Thanks for the cool story about being a good sport despite the conditions!

  7. Sounds like fun!

For some odd and bizarre reason, this photo reminded me of the head of a tap handle I saw last night at a local bar!
