London, UK; June 2009
The photo above is of a man reading a book on the roof of a narrowboat on Regent’s Canal near the Angel Islington. I love the way he is sitting in what is clearly an extension of his living space, soaking up the precious sunshine, with piles of chopped wood beside him ready for the colder months. I have to admit to some fascination with these colourful houseboats and this is not the first time I’ve featured them on the blog.
I took this shot on the way to a pub in Angel called The Narrowboat – sadly it’s not actually in one, but it’s right on the waterfront. Great pub with great food!
London, UK; September 2008
Another year, another bookworm, another London waterway… This second photo is of a girl perched on the fence at South Bank by the River Thames. I love how she is engrossed in her book, while our eye is drawn to the buildings and the cranes beyond in the City of London (the financial district).
I took this photos when out for the day with my fiancé (now husband) and his family. We went to Borough Market (one of my favourite places in London) and then wandered along the South Bank and stopped for a drink in one of the waterfront pubs. It’s a touristy area, but locals do come here too (I’m guessing this girl was local, but who can tell?). In any case, we were tourists for the day since our guests were out from Australia.
This post is my submission for Photo Friday, a weekly blogging event hosted by Debbie of Delicious Baby. Don’t forget to visit her blog to see all the submissions for this week – and you can also see my previous submissions. Please leave me a comment!

Does that guy really live there? That looks like such a fun way to live!
I’m with you on houseboat fascinations – UK, Netherlands wherever. He does seem at one with the environment. Wouldn’t mind being able to forget the world and get stuck into a good book anywhere, but I’m an easily distracted person and tend to start watching people instead of reading.

I love the houseboat picture especially. When we lived in London for a month, we were in Stoke Newington. I discovered the canals on bus rides with my one-year-old son and was completely charmed by them. Before that, I didn’t even know that London had canals!
Summer in London is the best! The river comes alive!

As a Seattleite, with similar weather to London, I have to wonder how many times a year Londoners can actually take advantage of sitting outside to enjoy a book. When the weather is nice here, we flock to the outdoors.

Reading is NOT overrated just under utilized!
Living on a house boat would be neat, though Michigan winters might be problematic for me.

Houseboats always fascinated me…we considered doing a vacation on a houseboat one year, but it didn’t happen.
Sleeping on a boat is the best…I usually manage to get a decent night’s sleep when I’m staying overnight on a boat.
Like Cate, I think I get too easily distracted by watching people when out reading in a public place
