Navel gazing – August: What have Roaming Tales visitors been reading?

I have delved into my Google Analytics report to find out what content was the most popular this month and I thought it would be fun to share it with you. Interestingly, some of the posts are quite old – Chris Anderson’s Long Tail at work (but without the business model).

Based on this analysis, I’ll highlight my favourite posts from August that you might have overlooked in my next post.

Most popular posts – August

1. Ben Southall as island caretaker: Hit or miss? (published August)

2. Close encounters with Arctic wildlife (published March but still popular – actually the top post by unique page views in August)

3. Top tips for visiting Borough Market in London (published July)

4. Follow Friday on Twitter (page, updated weekly)

5. Photo Friday: Naked bike riders in Cardiff (published July)

6. Recipe: Lebanese aubergine stew (published March)

7. About (my about page)

8. Best of the Web – Roaming Tales: Travel links for 17 August (published August)

9. Recipe road test: Roast beetroot (published February 2008)

10. Best of the Web – Roaming Tales: Travel links for 3 August (published August)

Top referrers

1. Referring sites (44%) – top referrer is StumbleUpon, followed by Twitter, then DeliciousBaby.

2. Search engines (39%) – top search terms were ‘breakfast to Singaporeans’, ‘what to do with beetroot’ and ‘gooseberry fool’. (The last term had the lowest bounce rate).

Note: These search terms were not leading by far but there were several versions of the beetroot request, as well as aubergine stew, in the top 10. I consistently get more Google traffic from food keywords than travel and seven out of the top 10 keywords were food related.

3. Direct traffic (16%)
