Photo Friday: East meets West – Tai Chi at Urquhart Castle

Scottish Highlands, UK; June 2009

_9A_0896

The setting: One of the farthest turrets of Urquhart Castle, a ruined medieval castle on the shores of Loch Ness in Scotland.

The players: Two middle-aged Japanese tourists practise their Tai Chi in the summer sunshine, overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the loch. Nessie stayed at home.

It’s unlikely that the original inhabitants of Urquhart Castle had even heard of Tai Chi. Yet somehow it seemed entirely fitting – the perfect response to the beauty of the surroundings.

So much for the stereotypes about Japanese tourists. On this day it was the gaijin taking thousands of photographs.

I’ll post more about the castle itself soon.

I’ve never practiced Tai Chi but it has always amazed me how practitioners can so unabashedly practice in the most open of spaces.

  6. You can feel the synchronicity in this shot, and stare at it almost waiting for their next step in the movement. Great moment, thanks for sharing.

  8. That’s a nice contrast – not what you’d expect to see at a Scottish castle – reminded me of when I saw my Greek brother in law wearing a kilt beside the pool.
