Wilson Island, Australia; April 2009
Did you catch my video of a turtle hatchling on Heron Island earlier this week?
On nearby Wilson Island, we were lucky enough to find the discarded shells. The turtles nest above the high-tide mark – sometimes in nice fine sand but sometimes a little higher into the leaf litter. You can see the tracks left by the big mother turtles on the beach here.
The ‘shells’ are not hard like a chicken egg but had a texture somewhere between a deflated balloon that had lost its rubberiness with age and a thick layer of paint that had peeled off from damp.

Passports with Purpose is underway for the second year and we are raising funds to build a school in rural Cambodia. Roaming Tales is proud to provide two fantastic prizes – one is a family resort package to Coconut Bay Beach Resort and Spa on the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia and the other is accommodation at Tranquility Bay Resort in Belize.
There are loads of other great prizes too, from cameras to backpacking and camping gear. It’s a fantastic cause and your odds of winning are probably pretty good, so please head over and pick up some raffle tickets at $US10 a throw. You can choose which raffle draws you want to enter, so there’s no risk of being stuck with an unwanted prize.

Ha Ha, not at all what I was expecting from “great Barrier reef” flag over at Delicious Baby. That sounds like a very strange texture for a shell, I’m not sure I would know what I was looking at. I’ll keep it in mind the next time I’m up there.
This is an adventure I’ve never been able to participate in. It sounds so exciting.
