Nominate your favourite food and travel bloggies for the 2010 Bloggies

One more day to get your nomination form in – please consider a vote for Roaming Tales!

2010 Bloggies

The Weblog Awards, or Bloggies, are on again and accepting nominations for one more day. I finally got my form in this afternoon, nominating a few of my favourite blogs, including several great food and travel blogs. There are topic categories such as travel, food, fashion, sport; regional categories such as Australian, Asian (includes Middle East), European, Latin American; and general categories such as photography and design.

If you enjoy Roaming Tales, please consider nominating me for a category such as travel, food or best-kept secret. But most importantly, just get your form in and be involved. Go to http://2010.bloggies.com. You have until 10pm EST (New York time) tomorrow, Tuesday January 12.

Bloggies v other awards

It seems that blog award schemes are multiplying but so often they are just pointless clicking contests. I’ve been seduced by them in the past, but in 2010 I’m ignoring all such faux awards. I like the Bloggies because it’s been running for 10 years and it has genuine credibility and a good system for using a combination of public votes and panels. You can only submit your nomination form once, though you get three nominations per category.

I like it as a blog reader too as it regularly introduces me to new, cool blogs. It’s how I first became acquainted with Camels and Chocolate, the winner of the best travel blog last year. Now that’s one of my regular reads and since its author Kristin Luna lives in the Bay Area, we’ve met and become friends. If my memory serves me correctly, the Bloggies were also my introduction to Rebecca Crump’s Ezra Pound Cake, one of my favourite food blogs.

Travel and food blogging

Last year I nominated Susie of Arabia, about an American woman living in Saudi Arabia, for Best Asian blog and she won! I’m sure she had other supporters too, but the Bloggies were new to her at the time so I was excited by the outcome! My only regret is that I can’t nominate more blogs.

Food blogging has been a mainstay of the Bloggies for many years but travel is a relative newcomer – that a travel category was introduced last year for the first time. In 2008 when I first looked at the Bloggies there were 11 food blogs in the shortlist (not just in the food category) and no travel blogs. In 2009 we gained a travel category and a travel/expat blog won the Best Asian blog section. Hopefully this year travel blogs will gain even wider recognition – I certainly nominated travel blogs in the design, photography, regional, group author and best-kept secret categories, as well as travel.

I have a good feeling about this year for travel blogging. We’ve come a long way!
