Swimming pools at Hearst Castle – The Neptune Pool

The first of two posts focusing on the gorgeous pools at Hearst Castle at San Simeon on California’s Highway 1.

My very favourite thing about Hearst Castle was its swimming pools. There are two of them and they are both exquisite. They are delightful just to look at but I was itching to swim. Throughout the whole tour I was fantasising about moving my body through the cool, aquamarine spring waters and rolling over to gaze up at the marble columns and foothills of the Sierra Nevada beyond.

It was almost enough to make me want to get a job at Hearst Castle. Apparently the staff get to use the Neptune Pool once a year. I understand it’s quite chilly though. Back in the day the pools were heated but the cost is astronomical so they keep it at a natural temperature these days. That’s okay, I swam in the Arctic; I can do cold.

The Neptune Pool was the first one we saw. It’s the enormous outdoor pool, surrounded by marble columns and statues. The centrepiece is actually the genuine facade of a Roman temple shipped over from Europe by Hearst.

Following are photos of the Neptune Pool – I’ll share photos of the Roman Pool in part 2.

That sounds like an amazing trip. I’ve never been to Fiji and would love to. We are kind of flying over it in December when we go from Hawaii to New Zealand, but we’ve decided not to stop as we’ll have plenty to do in those other two places. My earliest memories are of a trip to Venice when I was two and a half. I’ve recently written a post about it, hope you don’t mind me just posting the link instead of writing it all out again… http://itsasmallworldafterallfamily.wordpress.com/2010/04/07/memory/

Great minds think alike! Thanks for the link, you’re welcome to share. By the way, I think your comment was meant for this post: http://www.roamingtales.com/2010/05/21/photo-friday-childhood-fiji/ – Caitlin.
