Best of the Web: New York in the blogosphere

A collection of links about New York City and Long Island.

It isn’t long to go before a host of travel bloggers is due to descend on New York City for the TBEX conference. Thanks to the generosity of my readers, I’ll be among them. After spending some time in the city, I’m heading to upstate New York as well for a secret mission.

To celebrate, I’ve put together a carnival of all things New York. Hopefully this will help any TBEX attendees or regular NYC tourists with their planning!

Please share recent posts on New York in the comments (non-commercial links only, please).

Manhattan

Restaurants. Jen Laceda from My Folie a Deux is heading to New York later this year. In this post, she shares her dining plans for Manhattan restaurants.

Exhibitions. Intelligent Travel has news of an exhibition of rare National Geographic autochromes at the Steven Kasher Gallery.

Subway tour. Also on Intelligent Travel, news of an upcoming tour of the decommissioned City Hall station, the first subway station in New York City.

Immigrant history. A taste of immigrant history at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum from Sheila Scarborough at Perceptive Travel.

Film. Free French films in Central ParkNewYorkology has the details.

Whiskey. Andrew Hickey from The Brooklyn Nomad serves a post on three whiskey bars in Manhattan.

Street food. Andrew also has a great round-up of street food in New York City. (My only quibble: It would be really helpful to sort the carts by location or even have a map of some kind. Maybe this isn’t possible if the carts move around a lot).

Cheap eats. A round-up of food recommendations in NYC without the Manhattan price tag, from Legal Nomads.

What to do. Recommendations on where to stay, eat and shop in Manhattan from the blog Partly Sunny.

Brooklyn

BAM etc. Anja at Ever the Nomad writes about some of her favourite places in Brooklyn, including BAM (a major performing arts centre), Greenlight Bookstore, and two restaurants.

Queens

Museums. Sara Clarke on Matador recommends five little-known museums in New York. Three of the five are in Queens – the Museum of the Moving Image, 5 Pointz and PS1.

Bronx

Restaurants. 501 Places picks its favourite New York restaurants – including Italian restaurant Dominick’s in the Bronx. Several recommendations in Manhattan and Brooklyn too.

The Hamptons

Apparently Coopers Beach in Southampton, New York is the best beach in the United States. (I’m sceptical!). Robert Reid has a short video on World Hum.

  2. Wish I was off to TBEX but with clashes with other plans & the cost didn’t get it together this time – I’m full of admiration at such a creative way of funding it – might give that a go myself next time. Am interested in whether you’ll find the committments you had to make to get the backing were worth it – there’s no such thing as a free lunch.

  3. Very impressive list Caitlin. Covers some key things in NYC and gets me excited!

  4. Andrew says:

Thanks for including me (twice). As for the location of the food carts, they change quite often. But I linked to their websites which provide where they will be that day. I might also add their Twitter URLs to the post in order for people to follow them as they also tweet throughout the day where they currently are located.

That makes sense. I thought it might be something like that. It’s funny though because I would generally look for a food cart based on where I am rather than go to a different part of town to find a food cart! Even knowing regular spots would be nice. Ah well, if it doesn’t work that way, it is what it is. – Caitlin.

  5. Legal Nomads says:

Thanks kindly for including me! While I was living in NYC when I was saving for this RTW trip, so eating cheaply was a necessity. Looking forward to meeting you at TBEX!

  6. Andrew says:

I hear ya. As a New Yorker, when I am going for lunch with co-workers we usually tend to check their websites or tweets to see who is nearby. Since they move so often it gives us some variety. A few of those carts are worth hopping on a train and visiting.

Interesting, which ones? What would be, say, your top three? If they are smart they’ll park near TBEX! – Caitlin.
