
I guess this is a bit of an in-joke for writers but I found this picture in my archives and it tickled my funny bone all over again so I thought I’d share it. I snapped the photo in a bookshelf in London in 2005 but I don’t remember which one.
Do you see what’s wrong with the picture immediately? I’ll give you a minute…
… Take a look at where they’ve shelved Strunk and White’s Elements of Style. How I laughed when I saw this! On the title alone, it looks quite at home but clearly they haven’t looked inside.
Mind you, I’ve never seen an edition with such a fetching cover before. You could be forgiven for thinking the little dog was going to dispense sartorial advice. It’s actually just the illustrated edition.
I definitely recommend the book (or this one) if you want to be a better writer. But if the style advice you need is more cummerband than comma, then look elsewhere.
